Spectrum officials blamed vandalism for recent outages that have affected parts of Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Fiber optic lines were intentionally cut in the Van Nuys area early on June 15, according to the cable TV, internet and phone service provider. The downed lines then caused temporary outages for residents and businesses. Spectrum said service had been restored to the Ventura area by 9 a.m. But some residents reported service interruptions throughout the day.

Seven months after the Mountain Fire destroyed scores of local homes, the cause and origin of the blaze have yet to be released. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office is reviewing the investigative report, a case file that includes hundreds of gigabytes of documents, photographs and other evidence, said Paul Nuñez, the chief deputy district attorney.

The Ventura Police Department has released new details in a 2023 homicide, days after a suspect was arrested and charged in the case. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office charged Christian Alexandre Hillairet, 25, with two counts of murder on June 6. The charges stem from the recent killing of an Ojai woman and that of a Ventura man found dead in late 2023. The police department identified him as William Thompson, 46.

Test results from a young whale found dead on a Ventura beach showed high levels of a neurotoxin called domoic acid, officials reported. The female humpback that washed up near Surfers Point in April was one of several found dead during a severe domoic acid outbreak. But experts say there are too many unknowns to pinpoint the toxin as the cause of death.

Local officials described sea level rise as a slow-moving threat, but one that could cause costly damage — costs that could increase with a wait-and-see strategy.
