More than six months after major flooding devastated Newry city centre, dozens of businesses are still awaiting payments from the Department for the Economy’s Flood Support Scheme. Last October and November, businesses and infrastructure suffered in Newry and Downpatrick as a result of extreme weather conditions. And damage from the flooding remains obvious, with some shutters still pulled, and for others, relocation or reopening has been nearly entirely at their own cost.

A well-known Newry man has voiced concern over the roll-out of a new off-street parking system, after he received a £90 fine “under false pretences”. Author and public speaker Wayne Denner has urged the Council to “consider its messaging” to avoid further incorrect fines and extra fees. The changes came into effect in April this year, and have been instated in six of Newry’s off-street car parks. These include Abbey Way, Lower Water Street, Monaghan Street, Canal Bank, Basin Walk and New Street.
