BELLE FOURCHE, S.D.— A new conservation group that hopes to take partisanship out of support for the environment launched Thursday in Belle Fourche. Calling itself Nature Is Non-Partisan, the nationwide organization chose the Center of the Nation Memorial to announce itself. It says nature is one of the few things that connects everyone and that it deserves better than partisan bickering. Founder Benji Backer says Nature Is Non-Partisan was born out of that frustration.

PIERRE, S.D. — The South Dakota Supreme Court has ruled against convicted murderer Arnson Absolu in his bid for a new trial. Absolu was convicted of an August 2020 double homicide in Rapid City's Thompson Park, as well as the murder of a person believed to have accompanied him to the double homicide. A lower court denied Absolu's efforts to get a new trial based on information that — he claimed — prosecutors failed to disclose about one of the witnesses at the initial trial.

STURGIS, S.D. — A 13-year-old girl from rural Meade County is safe after being abducted early Sunday morning, according to Meade County Sheriff Pat West. The girl, whose identity has not been released, was reported missing at about 7:30 Sunday morning. Law enforcement quickly determined that she was probably abducted by a registered sex offender from the Omaha, Nebraska, area. A search of electronic communication identified the suspect as Sean Carlos Payne, 33, of Omaha.
