Man arrested in Attala County accused of impersonating law enforcement

KOSCIUSKO, Miss. (WTVA) - A man is in trouble with the law because he is accused of pulling a driver over in Attala County and pretending to be a law enforcement officer. The driver, however, turned out to be an off-duty Attala County sheriff's deputy. Curtis Gaines of Durant is now charged with impersonating an officer, improper equipment and marijuana possession.
Houston police officer avoids injury after shooting

HOUSTON, Miss. (WTVA) - A driver fired multiple shots at a Houston police officer over the weekend, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into what happened. MBI said it occurred around midnight early Sunday after the officer briefly followed the driver downtown, who is still being sought. It is not clear what triggered the pursuit. Houston's police chief would not comment on the investigation.
Golden Triangle aims for continued economic development

Elected officials and representatives from local companies and universities met on Wednesday, Oct. 16 to discuss strategic expansion and economic development in the region. Ten years ago, the Golden Triangle Development LINK hired an expert to prepare a target industry study. The goal behind the study was to analyze the region and produce competitive recommendations.
Grenada woman arrested over fatal weekend shooting

GRENADA, Miss. (WTVA) - A woman has been arrested over a fatal shooting in Grenada. The arrest of Jasmine Crowley, 29, was revealed on Monday. This comes after AC Hall Jr. was killed in his vehicle Saturday night. Grenada County gas station destroyed by fire

GRENADA COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) - A fire destroyed a gas station in Grenada County. Firefighters were called out to the North Shore Cross Roads gas station around 1 p.m. on Friday. The business was located at Mississippi 333 Scenic Loop and Highway 7 north of Grenada Lake. A customer told WTVA's Chris Nalls that he heard a loud noise coming from the storage room while he was shopping. The man says he grabbed a fire extinguisher and tried to put out the fire.
Columbus announces new retailer in old Kmart building

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) - The Columbus City Council announced what national retailer will move into the old Kmart store. Rural King plans to move into the building. The announcement came during a meeting on Tuesday evening, Oct. 1. The proposed project is pending approval from the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors on Oct. 7. The building has remained vacant since 2018. Mayor Keith Gaskin said this is a capital investment of $8 billion and is an exciting opportunity for Columbus and the Golden Triangle.
Columbus police chief frustrated after teenager killed over the weekend

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) - Columbus Police are investigating a deadly shooting that left a 16-year-old dead and a 17-year-old recovering. Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant confirmed that Marquez Carter was killed in a shooting in east Columbus. The shooting happened at an apartment complex on Constance Lane on Saturday, Sept. 28 around 3:23 p.m.A 17-year-old juvenile was transported to the hospital in Columbus and later released.
North Mississippians responding to Florida for hurricane relief

TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - First responders from across north Mississippi are going to Florida to help with recovery from Hurricane Helene. This includes power crews, firefighters and non-profits. One such agency is 4-County Electric Power Association in Lowndes County. The power company is preparing to send crews to Florida on Friday morning, Sept. 27. "Anybody down there in the utility business isn't prepared to try to deal with that kind of devastation," Jon Turner of 4 County Electric said.
Portion of Highway 182 in Starkville to close for construction

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - A major construction project begins Thursday in Starkville. The Highway 182 Revitalization project is part of a 10-year, multi-million renovation project. Westbound traffic on Highway 182 from North Long Street to Jackson Street will be closed until January 2025. That traffic is being detoured around construction. Westbound traffic will flow down Jackson Street to Lampkin Street. The eastbound lane will remain. However, delays are expected due to construction.
Starkville raises water and sewer rates by $3

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - Starkville residents will soon see a $3 increase on base rates of water and sewer. The price hike will go into effect on Nov. 1. The current base rate is $6 for water and $6 for sewer. Mayor Lynn Spruill said the extra money will go toward capital improvements at the wastewater treatment plant and a project for a new water well. An assessment revealed the city needs more than $40 million in improvements to its water and sewage systems, the mayor explained.
