Nydiah Wright said she became homeless a few years ago after she lost her job as a home health technician. “I used to do laundry, housekeeping and little things for older people, including meal preparation,” the 29-year-old said while she was sitting with some friends and a suitcase near Salvation Army’s Eliza Shirley House on North Broad Street. Wright said she lost her job over a small mistake. And after she lost her job, she lost her home.

Unemployment in Pennsylvania might be the lowest it has been in years, but the state is still dealing with a significant backlog in unemployment claims. For much of the year, unemployed Pennsylvanians have waited several weeks to have their initial claims approved or denied. Many of those who saw their claims denied and filed appeals have had to wait for as long as four or five months to get a decision on their appeal.
