Work is under way on a long-anticipated, €5.1m refurbishment of Mallow Swimming Pool, improvements that will eventually reduce energy costs and emissions and save the council money. The contract for the works was signed recently between Cork County Council and Cumnor Construction. The upgrades, which should be completed early next year, include a new extension with reception, administration, staff facilities, and visitors’ room.

More than 5,000 fans of musical theatre flocked to Waterford’s Lismore Castle over the weekend for the Blackwater Valley Opera Festival. The festival featured rarely seen works by international composers in the shadow of the historic building, along with other music events across Waterford and East Cork on the border. Presenting its most ambitious programme to date, the festival showcased some of Ireland’s and Europe’s finest classical performers against a backdrop of spectacular scenery.

A charity working to help the people of Gaza currently under onslaught from the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), and a family living under the ongoing bombardment, are to benefit from a fundraising event being held in North Cork next weekend. Tickets are available online for Grá to Gaza, described by organisers as “an evening of community, solidarity, food, and music in aid of the people of Gaza”, which will take place at Glenville House on Saturday between 6.30pm and 9.30pm.

The decline in rural pubs in West and North Cork and throughout the country was one of the factors cited by a councillor in describing Ireland as “the loneliest nation in Europe”. Brendan McCarthy, a Fine Gael councillor in the West Cork/Skibbereen district, said he was calling for incentivisation for rural pubs to remain open, insisting it wasn’t “about selling more drink or promoting alcohol in any way”.
