At today’s Chicago City Council meeting, Ald. Desmon Yancy (5th Ward) introduced an ordinance crafted to prevent unjust evictions. Now, it’ll go before the rules and housing committees for consideration. As written, the ordinance — named Just Cause for Eviction — protects renters who, under the current city law, don’t have to be given a reason for an eviction or non-renewal of a lease.

Back in the 1980s and 1990s, the Southwest Side’s Ford City Mall and far South Side’s Evergreen Plaza were places where teenagers were welcome to congregate, meet with friends and hang out on the weekends. Chicago had multiple skating rinks, teen clubs, bowling alleys, school-sponsored House parties and welcoming spaces — often called third spaces — where teens could kick it. Those were different times.

Similar to how teen clubs and school sets cultivated a space for House music and the jackin’ scene in the ’90s, juke also showed up in skating rinks throughout Chicago.B.
