Four-run fifth sends Ontario past Shelby in MOAC girls softball

SHELBY — Ellie Dawson belted a solo home run in the fifth and doubled and scored in the sixth as Ontario rallied for a 9-5 Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference win Wednesday at Shelby. The Warriors (15-6, 10-3) trailed 5-4 after three innings, but took the lead for good with a four-run fifth. Dawson led off the frame with a homer to left to tie it at 5-5. Maddie Mullins and Piper Studer had run-scoring singles in the frame.
Slone fires no-hitter, Shelby blanks Ontario

SHELBY — Travis Slone fired a five-inning no-hitter and Shelby cruised to a run rule-shortened 11-0 win over Ontario in Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference action Wednesday at Shelby. A left-hander, Slone walked one and struck out four. He threw 66 pitches, 41 for strikes. (The photos below were shot by Tom Theodore) The Whippets (11-9, 4-7) gave Slone all the support he would need in the home half of the first, scoring a pair of runs.
Play Ball! Historic Liberty Park field home to Madison middle school program

MANSFIELD — An important piece of the city’s storied baseball history has been resurrected. For the first time in decades, the crack of the bat can be heard echoing through Liberty Park. The Madison Local School District middle school teams moved into their new home ballpark a few weeks ago. Mansfield Mayor Jodie Perry was on hand to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a field that began hosting Industrial League games in the mid-1930s.
East Knox to drop to Division VI for upcoming football season

HOWARD - The Bulldogs are on the move. The Ohio High School Athletic Association released its divisional and regional alignments for the 2025 football season Thursday and the biggest news among Knox County schools is East Knox will drop to Division VI and slot into Region 23. The Bulldogs were in Division V last year. East Knox was 4-6 and finished 19th in Region 18.

ONTARIO â€” The tournament trail got a little rockier for the Warriors. The Ohio High School Athletic Association released its divisional and regional alignments for the 2025 football season Thursday and the biggest local storyline involves Ontario. The Warriors will move up to Division III after reaching the Division IV, Region 14 championship game last fall. Ontario reported a male enrollment of 241 boys in grades nine through 11 as of October 2023.

SHELBY â For Ava Bowman, every moment spent on the track this spring is reason for celebration. Shelbyâs senior sprinter is doing what she loves again. Bowman didnât have much to celebrate last year. She lost almost her entire junior season to injury after winning a pair of state medals as a sophomore. Her recent record-setting performance at the 92nd Mehock Relays could be the start of something special as the postseason rapidly approaches.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association released its divisional and regional alignments for the 2025 football season Thursday and the most interesting local news came in Division VII. Hillsdale, which won a Region 25 crown and reached the state championship game last year, will shift to Region 27. They will join Danville, which won the Region 27 title last November.

HOUSTON — A.J. Blubaugh could feel the love, even from 1,200 miles away. A 2019 Clear Fork graduate, Blubaugh made his big league debut with the Houston Astros on Wednesday. The hard-throwing right-hander gave up two earned runs and struck out six in four innings of work in a 7-4 loss to Detroit. News of Blubaugh’s promotion raced through Bellville and Butler late Monday and into Tuesday. Scores of Clear Fork Valley residents reached out to wish him well prior to Wednesday’s spot start.

BELLVILLE — A.J. Blubaugh realized a dream Wednesday, but it wasn’t his alone. The newest edition to the Houston Astros’ pitching rotation brought the entire Clear Fork Valley along for the ride. The 24-year-old Blubaugh made his major league debut Wednesday afternoon when the Astros hosted the Detroit Tigers in the final game of a three-game series at Daikin Park. He was promoted from Triple-A Sugar Land (Texas) late Monday and joined the Astros’ taxi-squad Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s start.

BELLVILLE — BELLVILLE — Garret Hotz did it all for Clear Fork on Monday. Hotz scattered four hits over seven innings and delivered a clutch two-run double in the sixth as the Colts blanked Shelby 6-0 in Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference action. The game was scoreless through five before Clear Fork (9-4, 6-3) erupted for six runs in the sixth. Jay Jackson led off with a single before Hunter Rahall drew a walk.
