I think first of my grandmother’s front lawn, nice but never exceptionally tidy beneath the shadow of her great, brick Italianate house. The plants were its border, and they’d enliven every spring with those big, pink blossoms, layered and bold. Backdrop to a million Ann Arbor photographs announcing graduations, engagements or weddings, peonies this week were the news.

There isn’t a lot of monotony in journalism. Breaking news is unpredictable, fast. In less than 24 hours last weekend one tragic, fatal crash on I-94 preceded another, this one more unusual, mysterious. We secure these stories, often piece by piece as details are released or come to light. For other, less obvious news we have to go digging, for people, for documents, for numbers.

I have school picnics with my children today, and then we are heading north for our first camping trip of the season. It’s not easy for me to relate. I’ve been working for the same company (this one) for most of my adult life. Santa Ono stayed at the University of Michigan for less time than it takes most people to earn a bachelor’s degree. Hired in 2022, he’s off to the University of Florida, the university president announced Sunday, one day after he spoke, along with Derek Jeter, at UM graduation.

Excellent reporting by @Simon_Schuster. "Nothing but controversies." What does it mean for 2024?

ICYMI: As infighting has reached a fever-pitch in some parts of the state, Kristina Karamo’s Michigan Republican Party has found itself navigating increasingly contentious relationships with the same activists that catapulted her to power. https://t.co/yeCRR4QCog

Imagine waiting for and finally receiving a heart transplant, and then finding out you needed another one. The takeaway? More people ought to put that little heart on their driver's license. https://t.co/XLEI08WKyZ
