EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio — As expected, the legal battle over who will become the permanent mayor of East Cleveland following the conviction of Brandon King on multiple charges of corruption has begun. On Monday, East Cleveland City Council President Lateek Shabazz filed a motion in the Eighth District Court of Appeals requesting that he be declared the city's mayor in the aftermath of the jury's verdict in King’s case on May 29.

AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Police Department has announced an arrest in the March 10 shooting that injured three people at the Field House Lounge. In a release issued on Tuesday, Akron police say detectives teamed up with the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force to arrest 22-year-old Jakel P. Blackwell. Blackwell was arrested on three counts of felonious assault, carrying a concealed weapon and having weapons under disability.

Two days after King was found guilty by a jury on 10 of the 12 counts against him, including theft in office and having an unlawful interest in a public contract, a swearing-in ceremony for East Cleveland City Council President Lateek Shabazz to become the city's new mayor was held on Sunday night.

AKRON, Ohio — It has been exactly one year since a mass shooting in Akron left one person dead and nearly 30 others injured in the area of Kelly and 8th avenues during a block party. To mark the occasion, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik released a statement Monday applauding the bravery of first responders and remembering the victims in the shooting. A year ago today, we experienced a mass shooting in our community, which sadly took the life of one individual and injured 28 more.

KENT, Ohio — With SB1, which prohibits diversity, equity and inclusion programs at Ohio public colleges, set to take effect later this month, Kent State University has announced that several of its identity-based centers will be closing their doors soon. In a release sent out on Monday, the university says it will no longer operate its LGBTQ+ Center, Women’s Center and Student Multicultural Center on the Kent Campus effective on June 27, one day before SB1 becomes law.
