The false messages — labeled “final notice” — urge people to pay up before their license is suspended, their credit score is dinged and they are prosecuted. The texts claim to be from a nonexistent “Illinois Department of Motor Vehicles.”“This is a phishing scam,” Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias warned this week.

    Peter Aleck says the force of the crash was so great, he thought his Hummer had been struck by another car. Instead, he had actually struck a cyclist crossing against a red light on a Divvy bike. The cyclist, 18-year-old Yader Castaneda, of southwest suburban Plano, was flung from his electric ride-share bike at Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street and died over an hour later, authorities said. He was the first bicycle fatality in Chicago of 2025, according to the city’s transportation department.

    Some drivers in Chicago will be walloped with unexpected tickets when 16 new speed cameras go live June 1. The new cameras, mostly placed on the North Side, are about to finish a 30-day warning period and a two-week blackout period so notices could be delivered. History shows the new cameras will issue significantly more tickets in their first days as drivers adjust their speeding habits.
