Dane County hospitals didn’t address the needs of low-income patients at risk for medical debt in a community needs assessment, as required by federal law, a Madison advocacy group alleges in a complaint to be filed Thursday. The nonprofit hospitals said the assessment, required by the Internal Revenue Service as part of their justification for tax-exempt status, complied with IRS requirements by incorporating input from a range of community groups.

UW Health and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield in Wisconsin, which said last month their contact might end April 15, said Wednesday the agreement has been extended to July 1 while the organizations negotiate a deal. The extension means people with Anthem insurance can still go to UW Health and won't face higher bills there, at least until July 1.
