The Listeners is the fourth new opera by the hot composer/librettist team of Missy Mazzoli (a former CSO composer-in-residence) and Royce Vavrek. Cocommissioned by Lyric Opera, and now onstage there for a five-performance run, it’s a tense and consistently engaging work, with a richly dramatic orchestral score and an excellent cast. Topical and ironic, it’s a potent catalyst for post-opera ruminations or conversations, definitely worth seeing.

Some things, mercifully, do not change. Giacomo Puccini’s soaring, straight-to-the-heart score for his 1896 opera La Bohème is one of them. Is the world—or your world—upside down? News of former president Jimmy Carter’s death on December 29 had me rummaging through a drawer I hadn’t opened in 40 years, searching in vain for notes from the day I met him. I didn’t find them, but this is what I remember: It was late summer or early fall, 1981.
