    A subdivision north of Aiken that eventually will have more than 700 homes is moving closer to becoming a reality. By a 5-0 vote, the Aiken County Planning Commission on April 17 approved, with contingencies, the preliminary plat (layout) for Section 1 of Bedford Landing. Six members of the panel were present at the meeting, which was held at the Aiken County Government Center. Chairman Jason Palmer didn’t vote because action on his part wasn’t needed to break a tie.

    Plans are being finalized for the Aiken County Recreation Center on Jefferson Davis Highway in Graniteville to get a major makeover that will cost several million dollars. Aiken County Council on April 15 unanimously approved a resolution that authorized the panel’s chairman, Gary Bunker, to enter into an agreement with J.E. Stewart Builders Inc. of Aiken to do the work. The county received six bids on the project, and the offer from J.E. Stewart Builders was the lowest at $3.149 million.

The two departments shared the No Limit to Live United Award. Other honorees included Aiken Electric Cooperative employees Regina Johnson and Lesley Griffin, who won Change Maker Awards.
