Cam Caminiti is no stranger to the spotlight. And this summer that same spotlight now shines on him in Augusta as he plays for the GreenJackets to start his professional career at the single-A level. Before the left-handed pitcher was drafted in the first round by the Atlanta Braves last summer, he was one of the top players in the entire country. Now he’s adjusting to living on his own for the first time at just 18 years old while learning to be a professional baseball player.

The season has been a learning experience for the Post 71 Halos this summer. As the younger counterparts to the Blue Angels fast-pitch softball team, the Halos are comprised of players from high schools across Aiken and Edgefield counties, from Aiken High to North Augusta and Fox Creek. While the group felt a little disjoined early on, head coach Jordan Willingham said they’ve started to get more comfortable as teammates on and off the field. “We got a lot of different girls,” he said.

For the 23rd year, Antonio Grant’s summer basketball camp helped hone the skills of young players across North Augusta. The camp is for girls and boys of all skill levels between the ages of 8 and 15. Grant, who leads it along with help from several alums, said he started the program as a way to offer more options for parents in the area after seeing camps in Augusta.

Tennis players from around South Carolina took over Aiken County over the weekend for the USTA 18 and Over League State Championships. Several venues around the county hosted the almost 900 players who came to town for the tournament, including the Odell Weeks Tennis Center and the Riverview Park tennis courts in North Augusta. Despite a rainy forecast predicted coming into the weekend, it mostly went on without a hitch, Director of Team Play PJ Fulmer said.
