FLORENCE, S.C. — S.C. Reps. Phillip Lowe and Jay Jordan Jr. will face challenges in the general election to retain the seats they currently hold. The Florence City Council race got more crowded on Monday, the last day to file for 2020 elections. Republican Steve Byrd filed to run for one one of two at-large seats up for election in 2020. Also getting more crowded is the race to become sheriff in Florence or Darlington Counties.

ANDREWS, S.C. – A bill calling for the amount of protected land in South Carolina to double by 2050 is expected to be introduced at the next session of the South Carolina General Assembly. State Sen. Chip Campsen, a Republican representing portions of Charleston, Colleton and Beaufort counties, is expected to introduce a bill called the South Carolina Conservation and Antiquities Act.

An Aiken man has been arrested after allegedly hitting a woman hard enough to break her ribs and collapse one of her lungs. Aiken Public Safety officers arrested Stephen Michael Smith, 40, on Nov. 18, according to an Aiken County Sheriff's Office booking report. A woman alleged Smith returned Oct. 25 to a residence on Palm Drive and woke her up by "aggressively" hitting her foot. She added Smith entered the room with the intent of arguing with her about her not answering a text message he sent her.

Is the city of Aiken hiding something about the development and collapse of the $75 million plus redevelopment effort known as Project Pascalis? The city's not trying to hide anything, Mayor Pro Tempore Ed Girardeau said. "There's nothing that's being hidden," Girardeau said. "In fact, I'll ask tonight to just disclose everything." Girardeau made his comments before the Aiken City Council went into executive session Nov. 12 to discuss a lawsuit filed to stop Project Pascalis.
