With a history that's more than two centuries old, the Aiken County area has been home to many notable individuals. Here are five who brought acclaim in different fields. Eulalie Chafee Salley championed and was a leader in the suffrage movement in the early 20th century, campaigning for the right for women to vote. Around 1912, Salley and five other women organized the Aiken County Equal Suffrage League. To fund her work, Salley applied for a real estate license in 1915.

Many people contributed to the development and growth of Aiken County through the years, but these five individuals played special roles. In his youth, William Gregg worked as a watchmaker and silversmith, but it was cotton that made him a textile manufacturing pioneer and established his legacy in Aiken County. Born in 1800 in Virginia, Gregg was apprenticed to a watchmaker and silversmith in Kentucky, in 1814.
