HENRICO, Va. (WWBT)—Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer and the beginning of a challenging season for the American Red Cross in collecting blood nationally and globally. “We see high schools and colleges, which are an incredible source of blood to the American Red Cross, going on their summer break. We see obviously an increase in summer travel, which means that there are less people around to donate blood,” American Red Cross communications director Jonathan McNamara said.

CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WWBT) - On Wednesday, May 28, a local hero embarks on a journey of hope and determination. He’s not taking a car or a plane. He’s doing it all in his wheelchair. It’s a powerful mission to raise awareness for multiple sclerosis and a more profound message: that paralysis does not define a person, purpose does. Randall Pope is a proud 30-year U.S. Army veteran. One morning, while in the Army, Randall says he went on a run and came back, unable to see out of his right eye.
