The 2025 Kansas Press Association Awards of Excellence were announced Wednesday by KPA Executive Director Emily Bradbury. The Great Bend Tribune will bring home 25 awards, including seven first-place awards, from the 2025 KPA Convention and Awards Celebration which will be held June 5-6 in Salina. When notified of the awards won by the Tribune staff, former Publisher Judy Duryee said, “I’m incredibly proud of the staff at the Great Bend Tribune.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal fire in rural Staples (MN) this morning. First responders arrived on scene shortly before 11:00 a.m. and found a residential structure engulfed in flames. Fire crews extinguished the blaze and located an adult male victim deceased inside the home. Two adult victims were transported to a hospital in Staples for treatment of smoke inhalation. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family members.

One person was injured during a house fire in Bismarck Saturday evening. The Bismarck Fire Department responded to the call shortly before 7:00 p.m.  When crews arrived on scene they found heavy smoke coming from the back of the single family home. Firefighters found siding burning and flames along the eaves of the structure.  Some of the fire extended into the attic area. There were no injuries to fire personnel.  One occupant was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.

An early morning fire (Sunday) damaged a Fargo apartment building.  The Fargo Fire Department responded to the blaze around 2:00 a.m.  Bystanders reported the fire on a balcony and in a unit. When fire crews arrived on scene they encountered heavy flames and smoke. Crews immediately pulled a hose line and knocked down the exterior fire. Additional units extinguished the interior fire located in an apartment and attic space. Damage was estimated at around $200,000 dollars.

A Michigan man is under arrest after law enforcement discovered hundreds of suspected fentanyl pills floating in a toilet. The bust occurred last week as officers from North Dakota Parole…Probation…and Pretrial Services and U.S. Marshals High Plains Fugitive Task Force conducted a search of a Mandan probationer’s home. The pills were successfully collected and secured. The name of the man under arrest was not released.
