San Jose Earthquakes agree to new deal with Salinas goalkeeper Emi Ochoa

The San Jose Earthquakes have agreed to a new contract with Salinas goalkeeper Emi Ochoa. The deal ties Ochoa to the club through the 2027 season. The Quakes also hold team options in 2028 and 2029. Of the signing, Quakes general manager Chris Leitch said, “We’re pleased to have Emi Ochoa continue his professional journey as a homegrown player with the San Jose Earthquakes."Ochoa is only 19 years old but has been with the club since November of 2019.
Santa Cruz swimmer Caspar Corbeau wins bronze at Paris Olympics

Santa Cruz swimmer Caspar Corbeau has won a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. While representing the Netherlands, Corbeau finished third in the men's 200-meter breaststroke final inside Paris La Defense Arena on Wednesday. Corbeau posted a time of 2:07.90 in the final. French swimmer Leon Marchand took home gold. Zac Stubblety-Cook of Australia finished second.Corbeau swam collegiately at the University of Texas at Austin. He competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Monterey Bay F.C. part ways with head coach Frank Yallop

Monterey Bay F.C. is moving on from sporting director and head coach Frank Yallop, the club announced on Wednesday. The club did not provide greater detail about the decision but said the two sides were "parting ways."Yallop is the only head coach that this team has known, joining the club back in 2021. Yallop’s assistant coach and former player, Ramiro Corrales, is also out. The Salinas native will not be with the club going forward.
Aptos wrestler Janie Houser finishes fourth at junior nationals

Aptos native Janie Houser finished fourth place at one of the nation's top high school wrestling competitions. Houser posted a 6-2 record at the 2024 U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota, last week. She competed in the 130-pound weight class and was selected from some of the top wrestlers in the state to represent California at the tournament. In high school, Houser wrestled for the Sunnyvale Wrestling Club. She graduated from Aptos High School in June.
San Antonio Spurs add Palma's Bouyea to NBA Summer League roster

The San Antonio Spurs have invited Palma graduate Jamaree Bouyea to the NBA Summer League. Bouyea is entering his third season in professional basketball. Over those years, he has spent time in both the G-League and the NBA. Bouyea closed out the 2023-24 season with the Spurs organization, playing for both the lower level Austin Spurs and the NBA squad. Last season in the G-League, Bouyea averaged 17.1 points on 47.3% shooting, along with 6.0 rebounds and 7.3 assists.
Local rugby star makes Team USA for second trip to Olympics

Seaside High School graduate Matai Leuta is going back to the Olympics. Leuta has made the United States Rugby Sevens roster and will represent the team in Paris. Leuta spent much of his childhood in Fiji. That is where his love for rugby began. He brought that passion back to the Central Coast, playing football at Seaside High and at Monterey Peninsula College. In 2013, he dedicated himself to the goal of becoming a professional rugby player. Leuta first made the United States Sevens in 2015.
First-place finish for Central Coast runner and Olympic hopeful Nikki Hiltz

Olympic hopeful and Aptos native Nikki Hiltz has advanced to the 1500m final at the U.S. Track and Field Trials.Hiltz finished first in their semifinal heat, posting a time of 4:01:40. That was the fastest time of all 24 semifinalists. With that, Hiltz has advanced to the final. That race is Sunday, June 30 at 5:09 p.m. The top three runners from that race will make the U.S. Olympic team.Hiltz was a six-time Central Coast Section champion at Aptos High School.
Monterey Bay FC and Earthquakes agree to loan for former All-Pac-12 player

Monterey Bay F.C. has agreed to a deal with their neighbors in Major League Soccer. Monterey Bay will bring in former Stanford star Ousseni Bouda on loan from the San Jose Earthquakes.Bouda was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year back in 2019. After missing a season due to injury, he led the Cardinal with five goals and nine assists in 2021. Bouda was selected by the Earthquakes with the eighth overall selection in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft. The forward has made 30 appearances for the Earthquakes.
Local runner advances at US Olympic Track and Field Trials

Central Coast runner Nikki Hiltz is one step closer to the Paris Olympics after a strong finish in the first round of the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. Hiltz is an Aptos native. On Thursday, they finished third in the first Women's 1500m heat and earned a spot in the semifinal. Hiltz came in at 4:16:00, more than 16 seconds off of their personal best (3:59:61), which was set back in July 2023. The semifinal will be held on Friday in Eugene, Oregon.
