While Lufkin High School's Abe Martin Stadium will get an upgrade on its turf beginning next week, work is nearing completion on replacing the turf in the Panthers' indoor practice facility. Abe Martin Stadium had a grass field until 2005, when the Lufkin ISD board approved replacing the grass with a product called Sports Turf with Austin-based Hellas Construction doing the work. The company also put turf in the school's indoor facility that had been proposed at that time.

Carl Abseck, who came here from Barbers Hill and and previously won the Class 5A Division I state championship in his first year as head coach at Cedar Park in 2015 and also has a state title as an assistant at Cedar Park in 2012 on his resume, is in his first year as head coach of the Panthers.

ATHENS - A two-run home run from Luke Green and a complete-game two-hitter from sophomore Brendan Fitzgerald carried the Huntington Red Devils to a 3-0 win in the opening game of the Class 3A Region III finals series over Whitney here Thursday night. Green, who was 3-for-3 on the night, scored the game's first run in the top of the first then hit one out to right in the third to give Huntington all the cushion they would need to take Game 1.
