Recently, two giant contributors to the outdoors stopped in East Texas at the opening of the new Bass Pro Shops in Tyler. We got a chance to talk with fishing legend Roland martin and Bass Pro founder Johnny Morris about the importance of preserving wildlife, fishing and natural settings for future generations.

    TYLER, Texas — This year's CBS19 Hooked on East Texas Urban Kids Fishing Derby is now the biggest one we've ever hosted. Just ask four-year-old Beau Culpepper: He caught his first catfish and he was excited as he excitedly showed us his catch. Beau had reason to be excited. The fish so big that Beau wanted it weighed. At the Urban Kids Fishing Derby the biggest fish wins one hundred dollars.

    TYLER, Texas — According to the National Weather Service, a "Virga Bomb" took place Tuesday night in West Texas. A "Virga Bomb" is a dry microburst that happens when heavy rain from a thunderstorm falls into very dry air, forcing it to evaporate before reaching the ground. When that happens, the air cools down and rushes to the ground at extreme speeds. In this case it was 97-knots or 111 mph. West Texas experienced some damages due to the weather event.

    TYLER, Texas — One of the rites of spring in East Texas is the white bass run. It happens every year when the water temperature in the creeks and rivers hits a certain temperature, and it sends a natural cue to the state's white, striper and yellow bass populations to start spawning. This year's run was predicted to offer anglers some very good opportunities to catch a lot of fish.

In this week’s edition of Hooked on East Texas, we go fishing for answers and find an East Texas connection to this unusual combination. When a customer walks into a Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers restaurant, they'll see a hard hat and a sockeye salmon hanging on the wall. That salmon replica is made in East Texas.
