TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Most employees of the Smith County Sheriff’s Office have been told they are not allowed to speak with Pct. 1 Commissioner Christina Drewry. In a directive sent to employees Feb. 14, Sheriff Larry Smith said employees are to forward questions to the sheriff or his secretary. Failure to adhere will result in administrative action and possible termination, according to the directive.

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - The Smith County Commissioners Court was presented Tuesday with an assessment of the county animal shelter’s needs. A number of animal advocates addressed the court ahead of the presentation. “A new shelter would be a game changer for the animals. They deserve more than to live in a kennel 24 hours a day,” said Gwen Coyle with Angel Paws Advocates. The county’s current animal shelter opened in 2016 inside the old Crescent Laundry.

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Could a jail expansion be on the horizon for Smith County? The Smith County Commissioners Court was presented Tuesday with findings from a study looking at the jail’s needs and a possible expansion. “This is not a commitment to anything,” said Pct. 2 Commissioner John Moore. “It’s just trying to look ahead.”The suggested location for expansion would behind the 1983 jail at the corner of E. Elm St. and S. Fannin Ave.
