TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Smith County is joining the fight against a private effort to pull billions of gallons of water from the major aquifer serving East Texas. The Smith County Commissioners Court voted Tuesday morning to allow the county judge to file a notice of contest for well permit applications made by Pine Bliss, LLC and Redtown Ranch Holdings, LLC. The permits seek permission to build wells that would extract water from the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer.

CARTHAGE, Texas (KLTV) - The Tyson Foods plant in Carthage was evacuated shortly after midnight Tuesday following an ammonia leak. The Carthage Fire Department responded and ensured the plant had been evacuated, according to Fire Chief Gene Giles. Officials opened the Carthage Civic Center as a shelter and temporarily evacuated some homes north of the plant. A Tyson worker wearing protective gear managed to close the valve and stop the leak, Giles said.

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Smith County Commissioners were told the new courthouse has reached a third of its completion Tuesday. In a morning meeting, the court was given a progress update of 35% from Hoar Construction Project Executive Stephen Flournoy, according to a city release. He also said the budget and current time frame is well within the goal.
