Attleborough Town Council said the blunder was due to the member of staff, who has since left the role, not being "au fait" with technology. The authority has declined to specify how the phone had been used during this time but has agreed to cover half of the costs, admitting it should have put a spending cap on the device. This decision has been met with anger among taxpayers, who demanded councillors pay out of their own pockets instead.

3 1/1 A major brand name is set to disappear from Norfolk high streets. WHSmith signage on stores across the county will be replaced with TGJones as part of a takeover. The retailer - which has shops in Norwich, Sheringham, Great Yarmouth, King's Lynn and Thetford - has sold all of its UK high street stores to Modella Capita, which owns Hobbycraft. The brand name was not included in the sale and the shops will be rebranded to TGJones as a result.

Graham Edwards, who has sat on Swaffham Town Council for more than five years, has been barred from its offices except to attend meetings, must be escorted in the building and may only contact one member of staff in light of the allegations. The dispute between Mr Edwards and council employees unravelled at an extraordinary meeting of the authority last month, which took place behind closed doors and relayed the outcome of an independent investigation commissioned by the authority.

The old Barclays building in Bridge Street, Thetford, has been empty for more than two years and could be transformed under the new proposals. Concerns have been raised about the site due to issues with vandalism and squatters taking over the building. The new plans would see it turned into nine flats with additional space for a new shop, restaurant or cafe. The Barclays branch closed in November 2022 due to a drop in the number of customers coming to do their banking in-store.
