The opening line of Andy Stewart’s ‘Donald, Where’s Your Troosers?’ seems a great way to start a blog post about a wonderful trip to Scotland to stay on the Isle of Skye. Well it would be if we had just returned, like Donald himself, with or without the troosers. This holiday, however, was in April 2024 and I’m only now putting finger to keyboard to share the details with you. My apologies.

Is Rotterdam an ugly city? Our local guide alluded to this on a very damp and chilly Easter Sunday morning as we left Uniworld’s River Queen and headed into the city centre. He elaborated on this statement, explaining that when much of Rotterdam was destroyed during World War II, it was replaced by a huge amount of concrete. This created a modern, open city where development wasn’t hindered by history but it wasn’t very attractive.

When we booked our Uniworld Tulips and Windmills river cruise we realised most other passengers would be choosing this particular trip in order to see the tulips and windmills. It’s in the name, isn’t it. To be perfectly honest, we booked the trip to coincide with Dougie’s birthday at the end of March and this particular cruise was available. We just wanted to escape after a few years of health issues.

Our Uniworld Tulips and Windmills cruise was a 10 day affair covering a fairly small region of the Netherlands and Belgium. This meant we had the chance to see lots of towns and cities. On a Uniworld cruise there can be two or three excursions options at each port so I’ll give you a little taste of some of the places we visited after we’d left Amsterdam, not including our visits to Keukenhof and Kinderdijk which feature in my last blog post.
