What better way to celebrate Dougie’s 60th birthday than a 10 day Uniworld Tulips and Windmills river cruise in the Netherlands and Belgium. We’ve cruised with Uniworld before: a fabulous trip down the Seine in the summer of 2018, so we knew we were in good hands. It was all a bit last minute but aren’t these decisions often the best –  just grabbing the opportunity when it arises.

I’d done a little planning before our trip to Bavaria so my first ‘must see’ was Hintersee, the nearest lake to Ramsau. We could have made use of our Berchtesgaden guest card and hopped on a bus but I knew that the hour’s walk would be a treat in itself. Initially we were walking on the southern bank of the river so it was a tad frosty with the mountains keeping us out of the sun. We enjoyed an easy walk through the woods until we reached Zauberwald or the Magic Forest.

We had only just touched down in Salzburg after our flight when Dougie’s phone rang. It was our taxi driver asking us to let him know when we had cleared customs. We rang him back and tried to locate him. Some translation errors meant we spent some time going up and down in the lift, trying to find the ‘second tier’, only to discover he meant he had parked adjacent to the first parking area. Honestly, after all the waving and instructions, he was only a few feet away.

In the days before the internet, if we fancied a short break in the UK, we picked up a brochure from a travel agent. Dougie and I would choose somewhere based on one photo and a few lines of text. Every year we would see the Lake Vyrnwy hotel in Wales and wonder what it would be like to stay in a wonderful place with no vowels. It took until 2023 before we actually made the decision to visit. It was Dougie’s idea.

Fundraising for Neuroendocrine Cancer UK isn’t all about the exercise bikes, although our morning cycling sessions do make up the bulk of the mileage. As The Proclaimers sing about walking 500 miles and 500 more we pull on our hiking boots whenever the opportunity arises. A couple of weeks ago we booked a short break in Surrey and discovered our accommodation in Brookwood was ideally located for a walk on the Basingstoke Canal.
