Georgia's Fostering Success Tax Credit was recently renewed for 2025 by the Georgia legislature with an annual cap of $30 million dollars to help young people who are aging out of foster care. The law lets Georgians, their families and businesses divert a portion of their state tax liability to help foster care programs. Revisions to the act passed by the General Assembly include young people who have experienced foster care, Wellroot CEO Allison Ashe said.

Austin Walters was lonely, his father, Gus Walters, said. The 31-year-old successful John Deere salesman struggled with untreated anxiety and depression. "He had a great group of friends," Walters said. "He loved being with people. He loved the outdoors. He loved to hike, fish."Austin Walters moved to Brunswick shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic isolated him from the people he needed to be near, his dad said. "He didn't have a partner in life, if you will," Walters said.

Families in states requiring it have an easier time navigating the stresses of being new parents, said Georgia Tech School of Public Policy researcher Lindsey Rose Bullinger who led a study on paid family leave and child abuse rates. "One of the ways that we can lower the rate of abuse and neglect among infants is to have more time for parents to bond with their children and learn their baby," she said.

A new residential facility that treats children with behavioral health challenges is expanding in Douglasville. The Inner Harbour campus of Youth Villages now has an administrative building and a cottage that, when complete, will accommodate 16 more young people between between the ages of 6 and 17. The youth program is designed to support the social, emotional, mental and physical needs of people living through trauma, Youth Villages Executive Director Tanya Anderson said.
