The seaside looks and tastes just as good as all those years agoTo get to Ardmore, Co Waterford, from Dublin in the 1980s and 1990s felt like a mammoth task. It meant driving through several towns and villages – Kilkenny (stopping in Langtons Hotel for a bowl of soup), through Thomastown, Callan, Knocktopher and Dungarvan before finally arriving in the fishing village, where complete freedom awaited me.

Her grandparents left Ireland and met in New York in the 1930sGrowing up in Dublin in the 1980s with an American mother meant my sister and I got far-flung holidays every summer, even though to us, these Long Island summers weren’t particularly exotic. But to visit our beloved grandmother and gorge on all the treats that New York could offer was bliss. Mum, a schoolteacher, spent her summers waitressing in the Hamptons – at The Lobster Inn in Bridgehampton – to make these trips possible.
