AURORA, IL — An Aurora resident escaped through a window after a fire broke out Sunday morning at his two-story house, according to Aurora Fire Department officials. The man was asleep when the blaze began around 11:40 a.m. at the house in the 1100 block of Garfield Avenue. A total of 22 personnel responded to the incident, and the resident was treated for smoke exposure but declined hospital treatment, according to a news release.

NORTH AURORA, IL — A North Aurora man will spend the rest of his natural life in prison as a result of fatally shooting two people in 2020, Kendall County State's Attorney Eric Weis announced Monday. A jury found James Brown, 31, guilty of two counts of first-degree murder following a nearly week-long trial in February. He was convicted in the deaths of Cassandra and Changina Chatman, who were shot in their house on Nov. 11, 2020.

OSWEGO, IL — On the heels of Illinois eliminating its grocery tax, Oswego is considering implementing its own tax to maintain its revenue base, according to village documents. The 1 percent grocery tax in Illinois will be eliminated starting Jan. 1, 2026. The village collected just over $913,000 in the "food" tax category in 2023 and estimates it received between $1 million and $1.25 million in grocery tax revenue in 2024, according to village documents.

PLAINFIELD, IL — A single-family home in the 16500 block of Lewood Drive broke out in flames Sunday evening, causing about $150,000 in damages, Plainfield Fire Protection District officials said. When Plainfield crews were dispatched at 6:12 p.m., they found heavy smoke conditions and fire extending from the back of the garage, up the side of the house, and into the second floor and attic. The family, who had been home at the time, escaped safely, according to a news release.

PLAINFIELD, IL — Heggs Road will be resurfaced starting next week, Plainfield officials announced. The road will be redone between 127th Street and 119th Street. Construction is scheduled to take place the week of April 28. The resurfacing project is a joint effort between the Village of Plainfield and Wheatland Township. Officials did not say how many days the project is expected to last but urged drivers to expect delays and drive carefully through the work zone.
