    The wildfire broke out on Friday evening on the hills outside Killea, close to the Donegal and Derry border. The fire service are currently at the scene and attempting to contain and extinguish the blaze. Smoke from the fire can be seen from miles away as the fire stretches across the hillside. It comes as County Donegal is subject to a Condition Orange – High Fire Risk warning for all areas where hazardous fuels such as dead grasses and shrub fuels such as heather and gorse exist.

    Bishop Martin Hayes of the Diocese of Kilmore was reacting after Augustinian Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the 267th pontiff of the Catholic Church. The new Pope is the first Augustinian and the first US citizen to become Pontiff. Bishop Hayes said it was a surprise that an American had been chosen but his first words of peace were inspiring. "Thanks be to God, the Holy Spirit continues to surprise, challenge and inspire us to live the Gospel of Our Lord, Jesus Christ.

    Private Seán Rooney, from Newtowncunningham in Donegal, was killed after the armoured vehicle he was driving came under fire near the village of Al-Aqbiyah in December 2022. He was 24 years old. A number of people have since been charged as part of the investigation into his death, but the case has been subject to numerous delays. A new hearing date has been scheduled for September 2025. Private Rooney’s family plan to attend the trial of those charged over his death later this year.

    Leitrim County Council has approved an application for accessibility improvements at Dromod Train Station on the Mohill Road. The application details the addition of a mobility impaired access structure (MIAS) that will be within the curtilage of six protected structures. The structure is a hybrid assembly of different concrete and steel elements including a pair of staircases (two flights each), free standing lift shafts, support portals, electrical services and a walkway.
