Chicago Public Schools officials on Wednesday announced a plan aimed at increasing the quality of arts instruction by establishing a comprehensive arts curriculum and a data-driven system to measure effectiveness of teaching. CPS CEO Pedro Martinez and other district officials discussed the CPS Arts Education Plan 2.0: Cultivating Creativity at a City Club of Chicago event. Martinez said the new plan builds off the progress from the district’s first expansive arts plan, which was released in 2012.

Lori Healey, who stepped in and out of roles in the public and private sectors, achieving successes in both and helping shape Chicago, has died. She was 65. Healey was chief of staff to Mayor Richard M. Daley; served as chief executive of McPier, the agency that operates McCormick Place; and most recently oversaw development of the Obama Presidential Center project. Healey died Saturday of pancreatic cancer, her family said in a statement.

Megan Vens-Policky has spent the last week scrambling to find new day care for her 4-year-old daughter. Her favorite place, A Step Ahead Learning Center, 4208 N. Broadway in Uptown, was forced to close its doors after 35 years on Wednesday due to a prolonged dispute between owner Tanneh Parker and the landlord over building conditions and rent.

When Mary Fabianski heard about the line-of-duty death of a Chicago firefighter last week, she recognized David Meyer’s name. Fabianski realized that Fire Captain Meyer had done some remodeling work in her kitchen about 10 years ago through his side business. “He was easy to work with, and he had a very small crew with him,” Fabianski said. “He was a very nice man, very nice.”Though her interaction with Meyer was brief, his warm personality left a mark.
