Gardaí are appealing for information following the theft of a car in Portarlington at the weekend. The bright pink Toyota Vitz car was stolen from outside a house at Shandra Woods, Gracefield, Portarlington at around 3.30am on the morning of Saturday, June 1. The owner of the car was recovered but was not in a ‘driveable’ condition. She said the loss of the car has caused her difficulty in getting to work, bringing her kids to playschool and to their grandmother’s house.

A Laois TD says the Mountmellick Flood Relief Scheme will cost five times its original estimate and have taken 15 years by the time it is completed. A junction near a pub in Laois was branded “a death trap” at a council meeting. Independent Cllr Ben Brennan asked in a motion: “That Laois County Council make safe the junction at The Mall pub on the R430 at Killeshin.”Senior Executive Engineer Tom Drennan said “Laois County Council has inspected this junction and will initiate verge trimming works with a view to improving the sightline visibility at this location in the immediate term.” Cllr Brennan urged the council to act quickly.

An Bord Pleanala has given the green light for a major upgrade to 7.3kms of electrical line between Portlaoise and Coolnabacky.   Solus Developments Limited of Ballyroan, Portlaoise, appealed the plans which had been approved by Laois County Council last December. Solus Developments Limited said the 110kv line passes within lands in its ownership which are zoned town centre. It said the lines should be undergrounded at these locations. However, An Bord Pleanala disagreed and granted permission.
