Bus stop enhancement works for Laois are to begin in Portarlington which doesn’t presently have a bus shelter. Independent Cllr Aidan Mullins requested bus shelters for the town in a recent motion.

Laois County Council has granted a licence for the largest ever Electric Picnic at Stradbally this August. The Council’s planning Department approved EP Republic Ltd’s application for the event to take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 29, 30 and 31. This year’s festival will have a daily limit of 80,000 attendees. The figure is up 6.25 percent on the previous year when the limit was set at 75,000 attendees per day.

A woman who was sexually assaulted by a piercing and tattoo artist in the Midlands says reporting the crime and pursuing a conviction is one of her proudest achievements. Karen Kelly hopes to encourage other people who have been sexually assaulted to come forward and get justice after her experience at the hands of the predator who worked in Portlaoise.  Karen was one of three victims Paul Kelleher (61) of Esker Gate, Mountmellick, was convicted of sexually assaulting.

Fine Gael Cllr Vivienne Phelan is the new Cathaoirleach of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District. The Stradbally native was proposed for the role by Fianna Fail Cllr Paschal McEvoy who said her contributions in the past year had been excellent. Fianna Fail Cllr Padraig Fleming seconded the nomination and said Cllr Phelan had “shown her mettle very incisively in her remarks” in the chamber and he believed she will do an excellent job as Cathaoirleach.
