SIOUX CENTER—It’s one of those pieces of local lore that shocks the imagination. Sioux Center had a zoo? At Children’s Park? With bears and peacocks? What on earth for? A few of the enclosures lasted long after the zoo opened 55 years ago, gaining an almost mythical quality to them, as if the bears still stalked the park in some dark corner, waiting for a moment to lunge at an unsuspecting parkgoer.

SIOUX CENTER—Hundreds of people packed into New Life Church in Sioux Center April 27, where they learned about how close to home trafficking truly is in Iowa. The church hosted the Team Iowa’s viewing of the documentary “Gridshock,” which provides viewers with an incredible look at what sex trafficking really looks like and how prevalent it is even in a small rural state like Iowa.

SIOUX CENTER—Construction on Dordt University’s cottages has progressed nicely this spring. Six cottages at the intersection of Seventh Street Northeast and Fourth Avenue Northeast in Sioux Center are being built as the latest housing option for Dordt senior students, offering a more residential style living space. Each cottage will be able to house six students.

SIOUX CENTER—There’s a lot left for Colt and Hanah Hofman to do before they leave on a yearlong deployment to the Middle East. The husband and wife who live in Primghar are members of different units of the Iowa Army National Guard, and are set to begin missions to serve in a support capacity. They will be sent off from Sioux City on May 28.

SIOUX CENTER—The Sioux Center Fire Department played host for the April 23 Sioux Center Chamber of Commerce meeting, giving the chamber members a closer look at the fire department’s plans for the future. Firefighter Kyle Van Holland presented the fire department’s plans for a training facility, a proposed project that was also discussed during a recent city council meeting.
