The soil in the clear jar is a reminder of a dark moment in Atlanta history. The red dirt symbolizes the location where Dennis T. Hubert, an 18-year-old Morehouse College student, was lynched by a group of white men in 1930 Atlanta’s Pittsburgh neighborhood. ExploreMorehouse names public health leader F. DuBois Bowman as 13th presidentThe jar has Hubert’s name on it and a medal draped across the top. On Sunday, Morehouse honored Hubert during its commencement ceremony with a posthumous degree.

Clark Atlanta University leaders on Thursday celebrated the start of construction of its Student Success Center, the first on-campus student building there in 20 years. The project comes at a pivotal time for Clark Atlanta and other historically Black colleges and universities. While enrollment has increased at many HBCUs in recent years, their administrators and advocates have raised longstanding concerns about a lack of funding to upgrade aging buildings on their campuses.

The Clark Atlanta University community is fondly remembering an alumna with multiple degrees from the historically Black school who was shot and killed late last week at a California college where she was a dean. Cameisha Clark, 35, dean of student affairs at Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Inglewood, California, died from a shooting that took place at the school on Friday.

A teenager was arrested after carrying a stolen AR-15 on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University, GBI officials said Thursday. Khamani Clayton, 19, was charged with theft by receiving stolen property and carrying weapons within a school safety zone. Clayton is not a student at the school, located in Americus, the GBI said.

Taraji P. Henson has been the leading lady in several major films and television series, winning several awards for her work.
