It looked like the Chicago Blackhawks were done for the night. They secured a key part of their future by taking Anton Frondell with the #3 overall pick, adding another talented piece to their young core. With the 25th pick, they opted for some size, taking Vaclav Nestrasil from the Czech Republic. Everybody agreed the team was done for the night. However, it seems GM Kyle Davidson had a surprise in store.

Something weird is going on. The Chicago Bears seemed to get their entire draft class locked up to their rookie contracts. Colston Loveland and four others put pen to paper by the end of the first week of May. Most fans assumed the rest would follow shortly. Another week passed. Then another. Then a month. It has now been almost two months, and none of the Bears’ 2nd round picks have signed their deals.

Being the backup quarterback means you won’t be the most visible player in an organization. You’re stuck in the shadow of the starter. You only start to matter for one of two reasons: the starter got hurt or the starter sucks. Rarely do backup quarterbacks get attention for their words. Yet Tyson Bagent keeps finding ways to do that. Make no mistake. The third-year player isn’t some hot head who spouts whatever comes to mind. He has far more class and common sense than that.

If anybody knows about the highs and lows of playing quarterback for the Chicago Bears, it’s Rex Grossman. The former 1st round pick led the team to its second Super Bowl appearance in 2006. However, he was a core reason they lost that game and never managed to start a full season before or after that year. Most view him as one of the many disappointments at the position over the past several decades. That said, he remains grateful for the experience he had in Chicago.

It is amazing how people use one year to decide how a young quarterback’s career will play out. Caleb Williams wasn’t good in 2024. He took way too many sacks, had frequent bouts of indecision, and looked like a rookie. On the other hand, he played far better than he should’ve. His offensive line was Swiss cheese, and the coaching staff belonged in the high school ranks. His throwing for over 3500 yards and only six interceptions under those conditions was a minor miracle.
