The Cubs enter Wednesday’s game tied for the MLB lead with nine wins and they’re up a game and a half in the division. This despite an 0-2 start in Japan that doomed their season. Did I mention they also have a +32 run differential that is 10 runs better than the next-closest team (Yankees)? I didn’t? Well, I’ll just have to correct that oversight next time.

The Cubs bounced back in a big way for the second consecutive Monday, trouncing the Rangers at a frigid Wrigley Field. They have now outscored their opponents 25-3 following Sunday bullpen implosions, which would be a great trend if it didn’t necessitate bad losses. Craig Counsell went with speed merchant Jon Berti at second base and leaned heavily into speed with the cold weather expected to neutralize any power.

New deals for Garrett Crochet, Ketel Marte, Jackson Merrill, and Kristian Campbell all grabbed their share of headlines, but Vladimir Guerrero Jr.‘s 14-year, $500 million deal with the Blue Jays made an even bigger splash. The ripples were seen washing across Lake Michigan from Wrigley Field, where Kyle Tucker‘s future will remain in question every day for the next six months or so unless he works out a deal of his own.

The Cubs snatched defeat from the jaws of victory for the second straight Sunday, blowing a 7-3 lead at home a week after giving up a snowman in the 8th inning of their finale in Arizona. And that’s with Craig Counsell putting out real lineups rather than Joe Maddon‘s maddening meatball matchups. Alas, they went out and swept the A’s following that earlier collapse. Now we’ll see if they can rebound against another AL West opponent.

The Cubs have blown late leads in each of their Sunday games this season, and walks have been at the heart of the issue. Of their 17 combined free passes in those two losses, the bullpen was responsible for 10 despite pitching only eight innings. For the season, Cubs relievers have racked up an MLB-worst 27 walks. You might be thinking that’s to be expected due to having played more games than any other team so far, but the Cubs are actually third in baseball with 41.2 bullpen innings.

My daughter is in LA for a choir trip and I told her she should go to the Cubs/Dodgers game. She said she couldn’t make it until at least the 3rd inning. Only 2 hours in LA and already she understands the culture.

Dodgers fans are pissed about pitches 6+ inches off the plate being called balls.

MLB just awarded Ohtani another home run on that pop fly.
