The Cubs have won seven straight series since dropping consecutive sets to the Giants and Mets a month ago, but now they face the team with the best record — and best pitcher — in baseball. What might have been little more than a novelty matchup at the start of the season is drawing national attention and causing quite a stir in Detroit. We saw how the city and its fans still have life with the Lion’ recent success, and now their other big cats are expecting standing-room-only crowds all weekend.

Who would have guessed back at the start of the season that the Cubs and Tigers would have the two best records in baseball when they met in early June? If you raised your hand, you’re either Nostradamus or a liar. In any case, both teams have taken care of business in their respective Central divisions and now square off for three games in Detroit. The Cubs do so with playoff odds that have jumped to 88.5% entering the weekend.

Cade Horton recently made the fourth start and fifth appearance of his MLB career, all of which have resulted in Cubs wins. The rookie has yet to allow more than three runs in a game, including this past Tuesday when he got the win by going 5.1 innings against the Nationals with three earned runs* on six hits and a walk. Except that he actually only allowed one earned. What was originally ruled a double for Daylen Lile in the bottom of the 3rd has been switched to an error on Michael Busch.

The Cubs failed to score last night, so even a great start from Matt Boyd wasn’t enough to get them a win. That means the series is tied heading into a game that feels more important than it may be in reality. With three games in Detroit and another three in Philly to follow, starting the road trip with a series loss in Washington would not be ideal. Drew Pomeranz will again get the nod as the opener in this one after starting ahead of Ben Brown last Saturday.
