CHICO — The Chico City Council, particularly two of its members, will spend a lot of time over the next several days in the building bearing its name. Tuesday afternoon, a two-hour strategic planning session in City Council Chambers precedes the regular meeting, which has an agenda packed with 15 action items ranging from fire maps and banning open flames in public spaces to street lights, weed abatement and municipal fees.

There's more to life than meetings. That's a good mantra for the working world (taking notes, boss?), but also for a journalist who covers local government and crafts a biweekly quiz on the side. A month with five Tuesdays, as April had, leaves a week without council meetings in Butte County's biggest communities. Nonetheless, plenty has taken place since the inaugural edition of The Quiz … such as the Board of Supervisors meeting and the Chico committee on homelessness meeting.

Last weekend, the north state enjoyed an embarrassment of riches with community events, even if the weather wasn't as enticing at the calendar. Contrary to what the co-chairs may imagine, harping on Chico’s Growth and Community Development Committee gives me little satisfaction and even less joy. The topic is too important, the implications so vast, that I’ve regularly weighed in on the nine-months-and-counting arc. Barring a miraculous metamorphosis in the final meeting (or two, if the status quo persists), frustration could prove the big takeaway as well as a big opportunity cost.

Nuanced positions do not make for catchy slogans, but...

I am pro Israel. I am pro Palestine. I do not support all of the Israeli governments policies. I deplore terrorism, which can never be excused. It is not hard to hold all of these positions at the same time.
