BIGGS — Water bottles and confetti cannons sprayed the field of the Biggs softball team, and “We are the Champions” was played over the speaker after Wolverines’ pitcher Gracie Sheppard struck out the final batter to claim the CIF NorCal Division V championship Friday. Allie Little and Mailey Seipert — the first and second basemen for the Wolverines, the only seniors on their roster and childhood friends since the age of 3 — jumped into each others’ arms after Biggs defeated King City 4-2.

With baseball and softball CIF NorCal tournaments wrapping up Saturday, members from area media have come to an agreement on the All-Northern Section teams for the 2025 season. All-Northern Section teams are selected by area media members from the Enterprise-Record, Paradise Post, Redding Record Searchlight, Marysville Appeal-Democrat, Red Bluff Daily News, Shasta County Sports and MaxPreps.

BIGGS - The top-seeded Biggs High softball team trailed the fourth-seed Miramonte 4-0 after three innings in the CIF NorCal Division V semifinal, but the Wolverines rallied for 11 runs in the final three innings to defeat the Matadors 11-6 Thursday in Biggs. The Wolverines had yet to get a hit through three innings, but they used 10 hits and took advantage of three Miramonte errors to score runs in the fourth, fifth and six innings.

SANTA ROSA — The Pleasant Valley softball team’s run in the CIF NorCal Division III playoffs came to an end Thursday when the sixth-seeded Vikings lost 1-0 to second-seeded Cardinal Newman. Two days after the Vikings upset No. 3 seed Carondalet 1-0, they were on the other end of another close game and nearly got another upset. The Vikings and Cardinals were scoreless through five innings, but PV was never able to scrape a run across against Cardinals’ pitcher Callie Howard.

OROVILLE — Las Plumas track and field athlete Jayden Newkirk, front and center, signs his letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic career with Division II Cal Poly Pomona surrounded by coaches and family on Monday at Las Plumas High School. Newkirk recently competed in the 105th CIF State Track and Field Championship Finals at Buchanan High School in the long jump, 100-meter and 200-meter race. He placed 21st in long jump and 20th overall in the 100-meter and 200-meter races.

BIGGS - At the start of the season Biggs High School senior Allie Little established a motto with her softball team - it starts now. While that motto applies for the start of each inning, the saying took on a whole new meaning Tuesday as the Wolverines began their hunt for a CIF NorCal Division V playoff championship. The No. 1 seed Biggs defeated No. 8 Willits 10-0 in Biggs, led by a no-hitter from Mid-Valley League MVP and Biggs ace Gracie Sheppard.
