A federal judge Wednesday shaved three years off the prison sentence of a Spokane man convicted of child pornography possession after an appellate court determined prosecutors “breached” a plea agreement . U.S. District Judge Mary K. Dimke sentenced Paul A. Murray, 52, to 7½ years in prison, a three-year reduction from Murray’s original sentence imposed in 2022 by U.S. District Judge Thomas O. Rice.

A 50-year-old Naples, Idaho, man died and two others were injured in a three-vehicle crash Monday on U.S. Highway 95 near Naples in North Idaho. A 33-year-old Spokane man was driving a van at about noon south on the highway when he rear-ended a Chevrolet GMT-400 pickup truck, according to an Idaho State Police news release. The truck was driven by the Naples man, who had a juvenile passenger with him.

The woman who died one week ago in a South Hill house fire has been identified as 65-year-old Lynn Zahniser, according to the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office. The fire at 608 W. 27th Ave. was reported in the early morning hours of April 9. Firefighters pulled Zahniser and her two dogs from the fire, but all three died at the scene, according to the Spokane Fire Department. Zahniser’s cause and manner of death are pending, according to the medical examiner’s office.

A 35-year-old woman who fatally stabbed a 61-year-old man and injured her mother last year in Spokane was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Kelly M. Hyde pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree murder in the death of David Johnson and first-degree assault for stabbing Jacqueline Mattingly in a fight on June 5 at a mobile home in the West Hills Neighborhood, according to court documents. Johnson and Mattingly, who was stabbed in the head 10 times, were married.

Apr. 11—Four Spokane County Sheriff's Office deputies who opened fire on a 55-year-old man who swung an ax at them will not face criminal charges for the deadly shooting last year in north Spokane. Deputies Hunter Ballou, Matthew Costello, Travis Moser and Parker Perry were "justified" in their use of lethal force against Richard Rogissart on the night of Jan. 30, 2024, at 6620 N. Calispel St., according to the Spokane County Prosecutor's Office.
