Tens of thousands of residents remain under evacuation orders and warnings Thursday morning as firefighters continue to battle for containment on the Hughes Fire that erupted near Castaic. The blaze was reported around 11 a.m. Wednesday in the area of Lake Hughes Road near Castaic Lake and used gusty winds to rapidly spread through steep terrain. Thousands of firefighters were called to battle the Hughes Fire, which had scorched 10,176 acres as of 11:36 p.m. Wednesday.
‘Cool, unsettled’ weather will usher in Thanksgiving in Southern California

Weather officials are advising that “cool and unsettled” weather will be hovering over Southern California this weekend and into midweek as an atmospheric river pushes rain into the region. According to the National Weather Service, powerful mid-latitude cyclones rotating in the Pacific Northwest will transport moisture to the region via multiple storm systems. “The first period of rain will last through Saturday,” NWS said in their area forecast discussion.

Inside Dick’s Sporting Goods in Cerritos Monday evening, Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler was scheduled to greet fans—but only if they were lucky enough to get a wristband. Video from Sky5 captured the early morning line outside the store, where fans waited eagerly for wristbands to meet the World Series hero. Some, like Juan Hernandez, wanted to pass along a message to the impending free agent.

An order from a federal judge to lockdown UCLA’s Jackie Robinson Stadium is set to go into effect at noon Thursday. The stadium and other plots of land located on V.A. property in West Los Angeles have been ordered to close until a deal is reached to use them in a way that benefits military veterans, for which they were originally intended. An ongoing court case about what will happen to the land and the school’s leases will also take place on Thursday.
Motorist dies after being shot, crashing in Los Angeles neighborhood

Police are searching for a gunman in the fatal shooting of a motorist who crashed in the Panorama City neighborhood of Los Angeles early Friday. The incident was reported around 1:30 a.m. on Van Nuys Boulevard near Osborne Street. Police said the motorist was shot while driving, lost control of the vehicle and careened into the fence of an apartment complex. Video showed other vehicles parked on the street were also struck by the gunfire.
‘Wildlife warning’ issued after mountain lion kills beloved pit bull

A local neighborhood council has issued a “Wildlife Warning” after a beloved rescue pit bull was killed by a mountain lion over the weekend. The incident occurred late Saturday night in the Oakridge Mobile Home Park neighborhood, located on Glenoaks Boulevard north of Foothill Boulevard. Video obtained by KTLA shows the mountain lion attacking Gigi, a pit bull who was out for a walk with her rescue owner when the wildcat snatched her away and began mauling her in the middle of the road.
San Fernando Valley residents fearful, frustrated after 2 more break-ins

Thieves targeted two more homes in the western San Fernando Valley Thursday night, successfully ransacking one in what was at least the tenth burglary in the area over the past month. In the most recent case, a resident who was home at the time reported at least two people trying to break into his Sherman Oaks home on Addison Street near Van Nuys Boulevard. He said the burglars ran away through the property’s backyard toward Morrison Street and got away before police arrived.

Thursday was the official first day of summer, and this weekend it’s going to feel like it across Southern California. “A heat wave is on the rise, starting today,” said KTLA’s Gene Kang. “Some areas will be in the triple digits.”According to the National Weather Service, Saturday’s widespread highs in parts of inland Southern California range from 96 to 106 degrees. Near the coast, temperatures in the high 70s to mid 80s should be expected.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder in the fatal stabbing of a burglary suspect who was allegedly breaking into cars on USC’s Greek Row in Los Angeles Monday night. The incident was reported around 8:15 p.m. in the 700 block of West 28th Street in the University Park neighborhood. Arriving officers found an unidentified man in his 30s suffering from stab wounds in an alleyway.

An altercation between a man and a suspect who was allegedly breaking into cars on USC’s fraternity row led to a fatal stabbing in Los Angeles Monday night. The incident was reported around 8:15 p.m. in the 700 block of West 28th Street in the University Park neighborhood. Arriving officers found man in his 30s suffering from stab wounds in an alleyway. The unidentified man, who was believed to be homeless, was pronounced dead at the scene, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed.
