ECRU, Miss. (WCBI) – A Mexican Citizen is indicted by a federal grand jury in Oxford for alleged illegal re-entry into the United States after being charged with a state child sex crime. According to court documents, 34-year-old Filiberto Gonzalez-Tovar of Ecru was arrested by the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office in August 2024, after a report of a sexual assault of a minor. Gonzalez-Tovar was charged in state court with two counts of rape.

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A West Point man has been arrested in Lowndes County after a brief pursuit. On Wednesday, May 28, deputies with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office arrested 56-year-old Gerry Scott Dailey. Dailey was accused of grand larceny from a local business. The arrest followed a two-mile chase after deputies attempted to stop Dailey for a traffic violation on Highway 82.

BROOKSVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Shots were fired at a barbershop in Brooksville on Thursday evening, May 29. According to Brooksville Police Chief Virginia Rich, no one was injured, and no arrests have been made. Chief Rich said this is an isolated incident, and the people involved knew each other. Chief Rich said this type of behavior will not be tolerated. This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information should contact Brooksville PD or Golden Triangle Crimestoppers.

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The city of Columbus held its weekly work session to discuss issues they plan to take up at Tuesday’s city council meeting. One of the topics of discussion was the city’s name policy. Mayor Keith Gaskin said that for years, there have been buildings and streets named after people. For example, the Trotter Convention Center, baseball fields at Propts Park, and the amphitheater are named after people.

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The city of Columbus is working on getting an Army Corps of Engineers grant to help with drainage issues primarily in the Memphis town area. This is around a $2.9 million grant focused on this area because of a high priority need. This is a 75/25 match, which would be about $1 million coming from the city. Mayor Keith Gaskin said that for years, these citizens have been dealing with their yards flooding every time there is a major rain.
