MADISON TOWNSHIP — A levy replacement could generate an additional $380,000 annually for the Madison Township Fire Department. Those funds are needed for fire department operations, according to township fire department Chief Ken Justus. The continuous levy was last passed in 2000 and still collects revenues based on 1999 home values. A replacement levy is on primary ballots for Madison Township residents during the May 6 primary election cycle.

SHELBY — The North Central State College Foundation inducted three distinguished leaders on April 10 to its Hall of Excellence. Ashland Mayor Matt Miller, Area Agency on Aging District 5 CEO Duana Patton, and retired NCSC vice president of institutional advancement Betty Preston were this year’s honorees. The Hall of Excellence started as the Entrepreneurial Hall of Fame in 2003, but expanded to include more community members beginning in 2016.

MANSFIELD — The duplex development at the intersection of Home and Walker Lake roads will be catered to “active adults,” according to Jerry Holden. “It will be a community right next to the bike trail,” he said. “Anyone can live there, but we’re gearing it more toward an active adult.”Mansfield Planning Commission approved final plans for the first phase of construction, affecting 11 lots on about 3.2 acres, at its meeting Tuesday.

MADISON TOWNSHIP — Madison Township is searching for its fifth zoning inspector in the last three years. Trustee Tom Brandt read the resignation letter from the most recent zoning inspector at the trustee meeting Monday night. Max Garber, appointed to the position in February, said in his resignation letter he could not work for a job that contributes to the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System and still receive disability benefits.

ASHLAND — Ashland County ranked in the top 40% of counties in Ohio for Small Business Administration loans by population last year. According to data from the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Columbus district office, Ashland and Richland counties received 46 of nearly 4,000 approved SBA 7(a) loans to Ohio businesses in fiscal year 2024 (October 2023-September 2024). Banks can provide SBA-backed loans that offer the lenders depending on how much they lend to an entrepreneur.
