    MADISON (WKOW) - The city of Madison is heading into the 2025 budget with a $27 million dollar deficit and the city's finance committee met Monday to approve key dates for budget development. Alder Mike Verveer says in his 30-year tenure as a Madison alder, it's the largest deficit he's ever seen the city have to make up. Because the city is dealing with such a gap, meetings about the budget started much earlier this year. Budget talks usually start in late summer or early fall.

    MADISON (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Supreme Court decided 6-1 that the Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee was acting unconstitutionally when it blocked land conservation projects and updates to state buildings. The lawsuit was filed by Gov. Tony Evers against Republican co-chair of the Joint Finance Committee, Sen. Howard Marklein. Evers is incredibly happy with the decision.

    MADISON (WKOW) -- A Dane County judge struck down some parts of the Walker-era law that stripped certain public sector employees of their collective bargaining power. Peggy Wirtz-Olsen, teacher and president of the Wisconsin Education Association Council, said Act 10 denied her and fellow teachers their ability to talk about important conditions in their classrooms for nearly 15 years. That would be things like student safety and working hours for teachers.

Kelly Hickman, owner of Sugar River Outfitters, has been taking groups kayaking and canoeing on the Sugar River for eight seasons now. He says adjusting between drought conditions and the heavy rainfall we've had recently has been turbulent.
