Public libraries across Northeast Ohio are warning their communities about steep cuts, loss of services, and possible closures that could arise due to the current proposed State House budget. According to the Ohio Library Council, the substitute bill introduced in the House Finance Committee proposes eliminating the Public Library Fund (PLF) as it exists today. “Ohio’s public libraries already experienced a $27 million loss in state funding in Calendar Year (CY) 2024 as compared to CY 2023.

On Jan. 28, in a groundbreaking moment, Sara Steimle was unanimously elected to the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities (Cuyahoga DD). All county boards in Ohio will be required to have at least one person with a disability on their governing boards by July 1, 2025. Steimle is the first person with disabilities to join the board. She receives services through the county. She was born with Cerebral Palsy.

For the next three days, Northeast Ohio will be gripped by a violent, persistent cold. That isn’t hyperbolic clickbait. From Sunday night through Wednesday, wind chill conditions will make it feel like -24 degrees outside. That’s frigid enough to cause frostbite in less than 30 minutes, and prolonged exposure could cause hypothermia. Conditions are projected to be at their worst as Tuesday transitions into Wednesday, the National Weather Service warns.

The City of Cleveland announced it is opening warming center across the city on Thursday. The facilities are open to anyone seeking shelter due to the winter storm. However, the facilities will not provide overnight shelther. Anyone seeking overnight shelther should call 211, the city said in a statement, and they will be connected with appropriat resources. You can also call the Cuyahoga County Office of Homeless services and ask for coordinated entry at 216-674-7400.

The Cleveland Turkey Trot – Nov. 28 – From 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Public Auditorium, the annual Cleveland Turkey Trot will send runners through the city ahead of their holiday meal. There is a registration fee, but there are also options for people who want a competitive run or a leisurely stroll to start their day.

Felicia Haney and Dahlia Fisher started Rebel Readers to bring more exposure to diverse authors, while creating a space for Northeast Ohioans to meet and break down misconceptions. Rebel Readers Cleveland recently celebrated its first birthday. The book club, which aims to champion diverse authors and unite Northeast Ohioans, was founded by Felicia Haney and Dahlia Fisher in 2023 and has grown in popularity. They now meet the third Sunday of every month at 3 p.m. at Loganberry Books.
