The deadline has come and gone for striking correction officers in New York to return to work. Any correction officers still striking are expected to face disciplinary action beginning on Sunday, according to a statement from the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). Saturday was the deadline for all correction officers participating in the unsanctioned strike to return to work, as per mediation talks.

A wildcat strike is underway by corrections officers at Collins and Elmira correctional facilities. A NYSCOPBA spokesperson confirmed Monday morning that corrections officers are refusing to enter the prisons because of working conditions. The union says they took this stance on their own and it was not sanctioned by union leaders. State law prohibits strikes by public employees.

The Collins Correctional Facility has been locked down since around 1 a.m. Wednesday following an incident, according to state Department of Corrections officials. The incident is currently under investigation, but so far three minor injuries to staff members have been reported. “These members need to be on high alert," said Kenny Gold, New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA), vice president, western region.
