New York State Canal System Opens This Week

Conditions permitting, all portions of the New York State Canal system are scheduled to open this Friday, May 16th for the annual navigation season—marking the 201st consecutive year of travel along New York’s Canals and the 200th anniversary of the original Erie Canal’s completion on October 26, 1825. There are no tolls or fees for recreational use of the Canal system this year.

Get ready to run this weekend. In Geneva more than 15-hundred people have signed up to run and walk in the Middle Finger 5K run and walk to benefit Thrive to Survive, a local cancer organization. Thrive to Survive, which has raised more than $1 million since it was founded in 2012, supports adults with cancer in Ontario, Seneca, Wayne and Yates counties. The race begins at 6am near the Finger Lakes Welcome Center. In Seneca Falls Saturday it the Women’s Right to Run.
Central New York Icon of Broadcasting Dies

An icon of Central New York broadcasting has died. Mike Price was 87-years old. Price retired from NewsChannel 9 in 2008, after a 46-year career. He debuted the character of Baron Daemon, which would define him for the rest of his life. He would do appearances and draw hundreds of people to area businesses. Price brought the “good news” to Central New York. His segment closed NewsChannel 9 broadcasts for years, focusing on the light-hearted, happy stories around the community.

All New York Rite Aid Stores Will Close

Bad news came Monday for Rite Aid employees and New Yorkers who rely on the drugstore chain for their medical prescription needs. All New York State Rite Aid stores across will shut down as the national company filed for bankruptcy again. Rite Aid last filed for bankruptcy protection in October 2023. The layoffs announced yesterday will begin on June 4th. Rite Aid has 178 stores in New York, including stores in Camillus, Canandaigua, Geneva, and Penn Yan.

The average price for a gallon of gasoline in New York State to begin the week stood at $3.10, no change from last Monday. One year ago, the New York State average was $3.73. The national average price for a gallon of gasoline as reported by AAA on Monday is $3.17, up two cents from last week. One year ago, the national average was $3.65. According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of regular saw few changes over the past week, going up slightly to $3.17.

Ginna To Test Sirens on Tuesday

Constellation Energy Generation’s R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant will perform a test of its public notification system on Tuesday. At 3 p.m., all 96 sirens will sound in Ginna’s 10-mile radius (which includes much of Webster and ends near the Irondequoit Bay) for three to five minutes. The tests will be initiated from the City of Rochester/Monroe County 911 activation point and will be incoordination with the Wayne County Emergency Operations Center.
