PITTSFIELD — Reports that U.S. Department of Agriculture farm agency staff who work in the Silvio O. Conte Federal Building were laid off have turned out to be false. But the fate of the building that houses the agency remains uncertain. The three USDA’s Pittsfield Service Center employees have not been fired amid widespread job cuts at the agency nationwide, said a person who works in the building and is familiar with the situation.

GREAT BARRINGTON — By next year, both water systems in town will serve as each other’s emergency backup source. Town officials announced on Tuesday that they approved the interconnection of the Great Barrington Fire District Water Department and the Housatonic Water Works Co. systems.

PITTSFIELD — Michael Gallagher just dug a well and is burying a water line at his at his Square Roots Farm in Lanesborough. The project will allow him to move his animals around the farm — both for the benefit of the soil and the animals. It was made possible by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, whose staffers work out of field offices that provide funding, loans and technical assistance to farmers.

GREAT BARRINGTON — State fire officials say they have recently obtained new information in an ongoing investigation into whether a wildfire that spread across East Mountain last fall was started accidentally or intentionally. Information “recently provided” to the Office of the State Fire Marshal about the cause of the Butternut Fire is the reason why Massachusetts State Police assigned to the marshal’s office is continuing its investigation, wrote Glenn M.
