From 2012 to 2015, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) hosted the National Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shores. The following year, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) hosted its inaugural tournament adjacent to Baldwin County’s Gulf waters. To help fill the gap for teams outside the NCAA’s Division I field, the AVCA introduced its Small College Beach Volleyball Championships in Tavares, Fla., starting in 2018.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) has announced the winners of the 2025 Outdoor Alabama Photo Contest. The judges had a very difficult time selecting the winning images from the nearly 2,000 photos that were entered. “Alabama is a photographer’s paradise thanks to its wide variety of natural landscapes, native plants and wildlife and outdoor recreation opportunities,” Chris Blankenship, ADCNR commissioner and a University of South Alabama graduate, said.

The sport of pickleball continues to explode along the Alabama Gulf Coast. Although Baldwin County led the way for many years, courts continue to pop up throughout Mobile County. And while most of these facilities are run by public parks, a new franchise will be opening soon in Mobile called PickleRage.
