    CANFIELD — Alex Wasylychyn turned 100 a few months ago. While he doesn’t get around like he used to, he does have a good mind and remembers his service years and the vital part his unit played in winning the second world war in Europe. Alex grew up on the South Side of Youngstown during the Great Depression and learned to work hard for a living at a young age. At 8, he hung out in downtown Youngstown and shined shoes to earn money.

    CANFIELD TOWNSHIP — Residents of Abbey Road received good news at Tuesday’s trustees meeting when they were informed the developer is planning to put in a swale and piping to remove water from the backyards and divert it to a pond across the street. Several residents came to a meeting earlier this month to complain about flooding issues that turn their backyard into a swamp.

    CANFIELD — The ribbon was cut as the new Farmers National Bank headquarters officially opened Thursday with more than 100 attending the ceremony and touring the facility. The $9 million, 28,000-square-foot addition to the Farmers campus will usher in new technology, while continuing to serve the bank’s customer base in two states and 70 locations.

The new partnership will hold its first class this fall, then in 2026 will be moved into the new medical wing for which ground was broken recently. According to HEMSPN Director Christina Devlin, the nursing school opened in 1957 as a hospital-based program under Salem Hospital.

    The Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District is training volunteers to monitor Mahoning County’s three major watersheds. With a $4,000 grant from the Ohio EPA, the district purchased equipment and will provide training to get the program running. Funding was awarded in January. “We apply for lots of grants, but this one will cover all the equipment we need to handle water quality monitoring,” said Zachary Felger, the district’s outreach and education specialist.
