City of Lincoln settles lawsuit over LPD crash for $780,000

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The Lincoln City Council unanimously approved the settlement over a crash involving local police at Monday night’s meeting. In total, the city council awarded $780,000 to Jarod and Jamie Velte for injuries and mental distress sustained after a crash involving a Lincoln Police Department vehicle. According to court documents, the crash occurred on Feb. 26, 2022, near 66th Street and Pine Lake Road.
One dead after two-vehicle crash near Greenwood

GREENWOOD, Neb. (KOLN) - One person is dead after a two-vehicle crash on Interstate-80 near Greenwood Sunday morning. According to Greenwood Fire Chief Mark Sobota, first responders were called to mile marker 419 and mile marker 420 near Greenwood on the report of a van vs. semi truck crash. When personnel arrived, both the van and the truck were in the center median. According to the fire department, the driver of the van was declared dead at the scene.

Custodian accused of stealing student’s shoes from Waverly High School

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - A Lincoln man who works as a custodian at Waverly High School is accused of stealing items from a student’s locker and reselling them. According to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, a Waverly High School student realized they were missing their track shoes, along with a number of other items, from their school locker. The student’s parents went to a Lincoln resale store, Play it Again Sports, and bought a pair of shoes for an upcoming event.
Two people injured after crash in south Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Two people were injured after a crash near Beaver Creek Lane and Pine Lake Road on Saturday at 9:27 a.m.According to Lincoln Police, a driver was travelling northbound on Beaver Creek Lane, when they prepared to turn west onto Pine Lake Road. As they were turning, they were struck by an eastbound vehicle, which reportedly ignored a red traffic light. LPD said the driver of the eastbound vehicle, a 17-year-old male juvenile, was cited for violating a traffic signal.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The University of Nebraska Interim President Chris Kabourek formally introduced the new Nebraska Director of Athletics, Troy Dannen, on Tuesday. Dannen, the former University of Washington athletic director, officially took over as Nebraska’s AD, Friday, March 22. Dannen’s hiring filled the vacancy left by Trev Alberts, who resigned unexpectedly to assume the athletic director position at Texas A&M.
Woman arrested after assault at People’s City Mission

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Lincoln Police arrested a woman after an assault at the People’s City Mission on Thursday. According to court documents, officers arrived and spoke with a 53-year-old woman who said she was choked and put in a headlock by her roommate, 40-year-old Melissa Daly. The victim told police she had gone to her room at the PCM but Daly told her to leave. The woman went to PCM staff, who told her to return to her room.
72-year-old man arrested for 3rd DUI offence

HICKMAN, Neb. (KOLN) - A 72-year-old man was arrested on Saturday after he ran into a tree near Hickman. The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said that deputies responded to a crash near South 82nd Street and Hickman Road at around 2:31 a.m. LSO said a man had driven off the road and hit a tree. The car was totaled due to the crash. The man was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, treated and released. LSO said the man was arrested for third DUI offense.
LPD arrests five people after robbery in central Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) -Lincoln Police have arrested five people in connection to a robbery in central Lincoln on Friday. According to LPD, a 23-year-old man was invited online to a party at an apartment complex near W and N. 23th Streets. After the 23-year-old arrived to the party around 6 p.m., he ran into several individuals dressed in ski masks. Several of those people were armed. LPD said the 23-year-old was assaulted and forced to hand over his wallet, car keys and iPhone.
Burglary at north Lincoln smoke shop causes $29,000 in damage

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - A burglary at a north Lincoln smoke shop caused $29,000 in damage after a car was rammed into the front of the building. According to LPD, officers were called to Cloud 9 Smoke Shop near N. 48th and Dudley streets at around 4:01 a.m. on the report of a car that had rammed into a building. When police arrived, they found a Black Honda Elantra crashed into the front of the building. LPD said the car appeared to have been stolen, with the ignition having been tampered with.
