On Sunday, I took my youngest son to Wrigley Field to watch the Cubs play the Reds. We had seats way down the right field line in section 232; that’s easily one of the more underrated parts of the ballpark. You have a view angled toward home plate and are at home run distance without dealing with the craziness that sometimes happens in the outfield bleachers, and all for one of the more reasonably priced tickets at the Friendly Confines.

There are plenty of reasons to be surprised the Chicago Cubs are doing as well as they are at this point in the season. As May comes to a close, they have a solid lead in their division and are among the top teams in the National League. That’s despite playing through the hardest strength of schedule in the first month of the season and going without their top two starting pitchers in Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga.

Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn ImagesDespite losing Justin Steele to Tommy John surgery in April and Shota Imanaga to a hamstring strain in early May, the Cubs starting pitching staff has held it together respectably. Going into the weekend series against the Reds, the Cubs’ starters had a collective 3.95 ERA and a 3.3 fWAR.

In the finale of a three-game sweep of the Rockies on Wednesday night, Matthew Boyd tossed six one-run innings. He struck out eight, walked none, and gave up just two hits. It was his fourth quality start of May and sixth of the season. Seventh, if you include an April start against the Dodgers in which three of the six runs he allowed were unearned. In eleven starts this year, Boyd has 64 strikeouts compared to 15 walks. In the month of May, Boyd has struck out 34 batters while walking only two.

On the day after Memorial Day, the White Sox are 17-37. They have had a few long-running losing streaks. They’ve coughed up a handful of games thanks to poor play, errors, and bad relief pitching. They’re bad. Against the Rangers at Rate Field on Sunday, the White Sox lost a lead late in the game thanks in part to Lenyn Sosa not having his foot on first base to secure a crucial out. To be fair to Sosa, he is not a true first baseman, so mistakes like the one on Sunday are bound to happen.
